Storytelling at the heart of a campaign

For many charities, personal stories are at the heart of their campaigns. Case in point: Aspire Public Schools, a charter school system serving students in low-income areas. The group recently launched their College for Certain Fund at a fundraising dinner.


The dinner event, held at the Bentley Reserve in San Francisco on May 20, blended together individual donors, current teachers and staff as well as graduating seniors who have benefited from attending Aspire schools . Towards the end of the evening, guests were encouraged to donate using their phones via Give by Cell’s Mobile Pledge and Screencast option, and were able to see their donations on a projected screen.

Give by Cell’s Mobile Pledge and Screencast introduced a new way to donate to the 150 attendees, many of whom were excited to text in and see their donations affected the thermometer on the screen.

“It’s so much more efficient,” said Aspire intern Erin. “The Mobile Pledge and Screencast was well put together and it was so much fun to see.”

The group’s goal for the evening was spelled out in an interesting manner: instead of asking for a large sum, the MC spelled out what the cost was per student, breaking down where each dollar would go. Then the MC announced the grand total and invited everyone to bring out their phones. Within minutes, Aspire quickly surpassed their goal of $350,000 ($250,000 was raised before the start of the event).

Event goers praised the ease of the technology and fun thermometer that appeared on the screen. The funds that Aspire raised that night would help their students on their path to college –and Give by Cell is proud to be part of that.
