Foundation Uses Targeted Text Messaging to Capture the Attention of Youth

As a third grade student growing up on the south side of Chicago, Dr. Denitra Griffin was once asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Denitra responded, “A bank teller.”

As the first member of her family to attend college, it wasn’t until Denitra’s experiences at Loyola University that she realized she could dream bigger.

Today, with a doctorate in educational leadership from DePaul University, Dr. Griffin and her husband, John Griffin, Jr., are inspiring the next generation to dream big through the Always Giving Back (AGB) Foundation.



Foundation History and Mission
AGB Foundation is the charitable arm of AGB Investigative Services, Inc., a full-service security company. Established in 2012, the foundation seeks to disrupt the cycle of poverty through workforce development, financial wellness, and philanthropy.

With over 8,600 hours of internships and $55,500 awarded in scholarships, the AGB Foundation has impacted hundreds of students, teaching them business and communication skills by exposing them to minority entrepreneurs and professionals.


Communicating with Youth
When the AGB Foundation has an event, fundraising campaign, or simply wants to send an inspirational message, how do they capture the attention of students, volunteers, and donors?

Using MMS - Multimedia Messaging Service
To stay connected with youth throughout the year, every Sunday, AGB Foundation sends an inspirational “Sunday Sitdown” MMS text to interns, alumni, and volunteers.

Life happens in between, which is why we have Sunday Sitdowns. It is an opportunity for us to encourage our youth on a weekly basis. We share motivational thoughts to uplift them.”

Collecting Cellphone Numbers

To create distribution lists, AGB Foundation asks people to text-in to subscribe. By simply texting the word “AGBFD” to a code, people self-enroll to receive text messages. In addition, the foundation uploads specific lists of contacts to their administrative dashboard.

In the past several months, the foundation has sent text reminders for #GivingTuesday, texts with links to foundation newsletters, texts linking to an online silent auction, and even thank-you texts to their donors.

Few Opt Out

From December 2020 to December 2021, the AGB Foundation sent 21,853 SMS texts and 4,593 MMS texts. With more than 2,100 subscribers, only 57 contacts (2.6%) have opted out.
